This Utopia backrest was fairly straightforward to install on my 2005 Honda Goldwing Gl1800. I originally followed the factory instructions, but found the top part of the bar that inserts into the seat was sitting too low pulling the hinge portion into the seat back. As I was contemplating as to what I did wrong, I found a manufacturer's sticker showing my seat was made in 2020. I redrilled my holes in the seat pan to match 2012 & newer. I reinsert the bar, bolted the t-bar and bar together and checked the seat and found the hinge portion was sitting flush with the seat back.I installed the seat back and adjusted the angle of the cushion for my comfort.It will take several rides to get this backrest dialed in.

Night and day. This is a great backrest and totally changes my riding experience on my Goldwing. Even though the GL 1800 already has a pretty comfy seat, this backrest just makes it that much better and a must for trips or long rides. Note that on the install, when the directions say that you have to depress the seat when getting the bar to match up with the holes, you REALLY have to depress the seat! If you do that, the install is pretty easy.
