  • Before there was the Maker movement, there was elenco and "learn by doing". elenco strives for quality with value to make their products available for everyone.

Build your own FM radio from PCB to soldering to finished, functioning radio receiver. All tools and solder needed to complete the job are included including: wire cutters, safety goggles, lead free solder and of course a 25 watt soldering iron. The result is a monophonic FM (frequency Modulation) receiver designed to receive FM signals in the frequency range (88-108mhz) it uses electronic auto-scan to search for FM stations. This scan system is done with two button switches-one switch scans up, the other resets to the start of the tuning position.

I think it needs to come with it. Better soldering iron for the students to be more successful.

I liked how easy it was to build and how everything is labeled but the only thing I dislike about it is that the soldering iron it comes with doesn't heat the entire iron, only one side of it, it was right in line with the gap in between the 2 ends of the safety sticker.

I had a blast making this kit. Took me roughly 4 hours, but the last hour was trouble shooting why the stations weren't coming in. Turns I had a bad connection for the 4 looped coil. I double checked all my soldering connections and it started working great. I'm 25 years old an never soldered or did anything like this. The instructions were very clear and easy to follow.

I have been assambling it little by little and teaching kids about the components and what they do.Well planed quality components and very informative. The end product works and the bonus is that the kids loved working on it.Many many hours of fun! making it.Thank you for this relatively easy yet challenging kid.

My 18 year old put this together to learn more about soldering & electronics. He had fun doing it, and the radio worked very well. Highly recommend. The only difficulty he had was with the battery case. It was hard to get the battery out, so he suggests to be gentle with that.

This kit is not for beginners like myself. I think the board is too small for those of us who are inexperienced at soldering. The instructions need to be improved. They should include a basic test meter and there should be steps to test the circuits as you go rather than waiting until the end to plug the battery in at the end to see if it works. I would have also liked to see explanations of what each component is doing.I had to revise the review because after contacting the company, they were very helpful After looking at the pictures I sent them, it they said "you burnt off some copper traces so I don’t think that radios going to work. I'm going to send you a new kit. Practice solder parts to that board before starting the new kit." That is great customer service. Thanks Marc

If you want a quality working frequency modulation device (or FM radio) then you should buy a pre-assembled unit. You have to accept the fact that this device may (or may not) work correctly when completed. It's a learning project for beginners. I've read some reviews saying that this isn't for beginners but, in my opinion, it's perfect for beginners. At first it looks intimidating but after you read the instructions a few times and solder your first few discap capacitors it's just a matter of time before you get the hang of it. It took me five hours. When finished it worked great for about thirty minutes. That was enough time for me to take a video and upload it to social media. Now it has stopped picking up signals but it served its purpose.

Me and my grandson (15) had great fun with this. I did the first solder, and he did all the rest, with me holding things to make it easier. The radio worked first time! Took about 3 or 4 hours. It's great that it comes with the soldering iron, solder and even snips to cut off the excess wires. Instructions are good, and even contain detailed lessons on electronic theory if you are interested, although you don't need to read those to build the kit.
