I’ve been using this 16-inch throwing axe with the 1065 high manganese steel head and hickory handle for a while now, and it’s turned out to be a pretty versatile tool. It’s marketed as a competition throwing axe, and it definitely holds its own in that department. The balance feels natural, and the weight is about what I’d expect for an axe this size. It’s easy to control, and once I got the hang of my release, I could stick it consistently without feeling like I was fighting the tool. The steel seems tough, too. I’ve had my fair share of bad throws that sent it clanging off the target or the ground, and the edge held up without any noticeable chips or rolling, so they didn’t skimp on the heat treatment. What surprised me was how well it works for other chores around the yard and camp. I’ve taken it along on camping trips and used it to prune small branches, clear brush, and split kindling. It’s not a heavy splitting axe, so I’m not busting through logs with it, but for smaller pieces and cleaning up fallen branches, it’s handy to have around. The hickory handle feels solid, and the grain on mine runs pretty much straight along the length, which is a good sign it won’t snap with regular use. The handle has enough texture to get a good grip, even if my hands are sweaty, but it’s still smooth enough that I’m not worried about splinters. After a bit of use, I gave it a light coat of oil to keep the wood in good shape, especially after a few damp trips. The nylon sheath that comes with it does its job well enough, but I wouldn’t call it heavy duty. It covers the edge and keeps it from slicing anything it shouldn’t, but I wouldn’t trust it to stay put if the axe was bouncing around loose in the back of my truck. I added a little paracord loop to the snap to keep it from working loose when the sheath softened up after a few wet days. That’s not a deal breaker for me, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re planning to haul this thing around. The factory edge was good enough for throwing, but it wasn’t particularly sharp for anything else. I took a file and sharpening stone to it, and now it’s sharp enough to handle small branches and kindling without needing to muscle through every cut. If you’re buying this just to throw, you’ll probably be fine out of the box. If you want it to double as a camp axe, plan on spending a few minutes tuning up the edge. Overall, it’s been a reliable little axe that throws well and handles light camp work without feeling flimsy. It’s not a do-it-all survival tool, but for throwing practice and campsite chores, it’s earned its spot in my gear pile.

I added this to my throwing collection and it fits well, right into my throwing block next to my throwing knifes. Good rotation and solid build.

The handle broke within an hour of use on an end-grain target. Better off buying a camping axe from Ace.

Overall, this is a well-made little hatchet that works great for both throwing and camp tasks. The steel so far is solid. The blade came nice and sharp and oiled, which told me it's well made because of the little things the manufacturer thought of. Also ensures the longevity of the product. The wood handle is nice and sturdy, with the right grain alignment, which is something that's getting harder to find these days. The connection between the head and handle is very secure, so I don’t see any issues with durability or longevity. For throwing, it’s well-balanced with a good turnover rate. It has enough weight to stick well in a target but isn’t so heavy that it feels unwieldy. The sheath is surprisingly nice, though I do wish it had a belt loop for easier carrying, since my intended purpose is using this for camping. It fits a little tight at first, but after a few uses, it conforms to the axe head nicely.Beyond throwing, it also works well for splitting small rounds for kindling, which has been my use so far. It required just a little honing to get it razor-sharp, but overall, this is a great little hatchet that I expect to last a long time.

We have our own axe throwing board in the backyard. It's a hit with friends. We're always looking for more options in axes for them to try out. Different weights, balances, etc can make the difference between someone having a good time and never sticking a throw. This axe has a good feel in the hand and I was able to stick it from the very first throw. It's a bit lighter than I usually throw but is a good weight for my wife. It came nice and sharp and I didn't have to fine tune the edge at all. The handle is sturdy and the head is affixed firmly. I didn't feel like it was going to move any time soon.
