As another review mentions, they are covered in a layer of thin, textured plastic that flakes off almost immediately. The texture would certainly hurt the aerodynamics, and the plastic flaking off is a risk for the discus slipping out of the grip. The molding seam is right where the finger pads would hold the rim, and sharp in places. Not very safe. Practice discs of better quality are only a few dollars more.The gold color makes it a nice gift or award for athletes who win an invitational or championship, though, which is what I bought them for.
