Needed to really clean and prime, although it says you don't have to.This is more of a toy or art project than a real cooler. Thin walls...I've painted several, this is the first time I bought one made to be painted and I'm disappointed. The lid is especially textured, not condusive for painting.

I am rating just based off what I saw when the cooler arrived. I ordered it for my daughter who needed to decorate it for a fraternity formal she was attending, so from what I saw it looked fairly durable and sturdy. I gave it a 4-star rating simply because I wish the top was also "paintable". I pre-warned her but being at school, super busy, and no time to prep the top to take paint, she painted it anyway. She said the paint on the sides held up, but obviously every time someone got into the cooler the paint on the top came off. She spent a ton of time decorating this for her friend...just hate that for the money, the top isn't also paintable since (in the case of fraternity formals) the tops are also decorated. Other than that it was perfect.

I bought this so excited to paint for a friend. Was surprised when I found that the top did not come sanded as well as the rest of the cooler! Slightly disappointed, thought i wasn’t going to have to have to do any sanding

I have painted a couple of coolers for fraternity formals, and the prep work is the biggest hassle. Sanding, spackling, priming, before you can even start to paint? No way! This cooler costs a little more than a regular cooler, but you save tons of time and effort. Forget the prep work and let your creativity flow!

Very easy to decorate. I used Sharpie Markers, Acrylic paint and also did a photo transfer using Mod Podge Transfer medium. All worked very well. Remember to seal your artwork with a sealer when you are finished~~ I used Mod Podge sealer!
