Who wants their fruit in just regular boring square shapes? Honestly, I do but the melon balls do look prettier. This a good set- it's sturdy and works well so far. I haven't totally mastered the zig-zag cut on the watermelon but that's alright, I'll keep that skill off my resume for now. There's a lot of variations of this tool out there but at this price for a set of three and it comes with cute little fruit forks, I'd say this is a good deal.

I come from Midwestern stock, so I'm all in on a carved watermelon fruit salad basket at the family potlucks. In past, I've made do with a paring knife and a cheap melon baller, with varying levels of success. These tools are definitely a step up. I tested them on the small melon I already had in the fridge, but I think the tools are sized and shaped to suit any size. The zig zag cutter was nice and sharp, which made it very easy to use for piercing the rind. (Watch your fingers, though!) If you line up the cutter such that half lines up with the previous cut (see pic), your line will not wander too much as you work around the melon. Yes it's twice as many cuts, but it gets you a nice straight line. Once you've cut the rind all the way around, the melon will just break in half for you. The melon baller works exactly as you'd expect. The slicer/cuber tool was really easy to use, both for cutting strips, slices, or cubes in place, and for cleaning out the watermelon shell in preparation for further carving or filling with your fruit salad. It cuts through cleanly and the angled head and small handle make it easy to see exactly where you are cutting. I think these tools will be great for any of your melons, and the zig zag and slicer tools would be great for older kids carving and scraping out those Halloween jack-o-lanterns.
