I actually have a playable djembe, and have included some images to give a sense of scale.I like that these mini-drums are actually made of wood and have what appear to be possibly dried parchment tops tied down with string – a surprisingly good reproduction of a full-sized djembe. In fact I wouldn’t mind at all having full-sized versions of these designs.I like that the skin, whatever it’s made of, is very taut and feels pretty durable. I can see using it for a backpack zipper pull but I’d be less comfortable attaching my everyday keys and bouncing it around in my pockets. The mini drums feel quite light which tells me the main chamber beneath the skin is hollow to some degree. But whoever designed these missed one critical detail. A djembe is hollow all the way through the base. Indeed, that serves as a sound hole and is the reason for wearing a strap that lifts the base off the ground. I can’t resist drilling one of them out to see if I can get a little more volume out of it!The sound? Well, if you tap your fingernail on the head you get something that sounds like a low-volume, slightly warmer clack of a wooden clave.Bottom Line: Too small to actually play but attractive and well made, for what they are.

These are so cute and they have a native-made look to them. A nice colorful decoration to brighten up the gloom of winter.A fun item!
