I use them on my canoe anchor and my stinger. The anchor rope has a float attached so than I can jettison it in a hurry if needed and then to retrieve it. The stringer has a short piece of nylon rope attached to use on the cleat.

Having grown up a "proper" sailor, I'd always scoffed at these "cheater" cleats... until I put one on a kayak, because I needed a one handed cleating option. They work really well, and though I wouldn't use them to secure anything much larger than a canoe to a dock, I've put them on our powerboat to make attaching and adjusting fender height much easier. The only weak point are the screw inserts - they're more of a hard plastic than rubber, and the threaded brass ferrules can be pushed out if you put too much downward force on the screwdriver when putting them in. When you install them, put the inserts into the drilled holes (my apologies, I can't remember if I used a 5/16" or a 3/8" bit), loosely hold the cleat over them, and start the screws by hand. The inserts may want to spin, so if and when that happens, push the cleat against the surface of the boat, and it will grab the flange on the insert. Screw in normally, without too much downward pressure, and they'll tighten up fine. And though sized for 1/4-5/16" line, they're doing fine with the 7/16" line that came on my fenders.

It seems a tad to big for paracord. But, ill use it for bigger ropes.
