1.Position the bar end of the tool under the axle tube and hook the spring in the tool tab
2.Push down and outward on the tool handle until the spring loop can be removed from brake shoe

Perfect Design
The install tool has a hook engages the spring at the J eye on the end. Simply hook the retaining spring loop and press down against the axle.
It is better using the air brake spring installer tool than using vise grips, screwdrivers to unhook the retaining springs.

It is the right shape and bends. However, the hook tooth that you use to grab the spring with is a separate piece and poorly attached with two short inadequate set screws. It starts to become loose almost right away and once it breaks the tool is useless.
