STEP 1
1.Open the cover plate and carefully wipe the detection prism with a soft cloth.
STEP 2
2.Drop several drops of test solution and cover the cover plate
STEP 3
3.Through the eyepiece to see the degeree, the prism faces the bight place, and the tail can be rotated to adjust the clear reading
STEP 4
4.Observe the results through the eyepiece

This refractometer works really well for alcohol. I did some initial test, of course with water which was zero and then I tried a couple of alcohols that I already have, but I know the exact concentration of. Each one of those registered perfectly. I have some homemade alcohol that I've been trying to test and see where it's at and this is let me track that progress. I will say it definitely needs some light to operate. I have undercabinet lighting and I just kind of bend over and let it shine into it and it works really well.

This is a decent tool at a great price. The ATC claims to work over a range of 50° to 86°F. The unit is pretty lightweight, so most likely all of the internal components are plastic, as is the cover slip.I don't have any standardized solution to test it on, but I used some commercial examples of bottled spirits - mostly bourbons - to test it. All seemed to measure a couple percent higher than the number on the bottle. Whether this is due to substance other than alcohol in the bourbon, or an inaccuracy of the refractometer, I am not sure, but I suspect the latter.So while I would not use this for an exact measurement of alcohol content, it will certainly get you in the ballpark, and will be useful for most of the work I do. Should be very useful for distilling, blending, etc.
