Reliable, durable. Great pad life. Easily taken apart, re-greased and rebuilt. A solid performer. Noisy in the rain though.

The BB7 disc brake caliper always works. I have never had a bad one or any installation problems. The BB7 is an excellent value for the money. I quit using pinch brakes and went to disc brakes long ago. Rotor size choices help control your braking. I use a 180 disc on the front and a 160 on the back. Road bikes should consider reversing this number, using the larger 180 discs on the back. Many riders can avoid using the 180 on the front and instead use the 160 on the back and front.

Good power and easy to set up. It’d be a 4-Star rating but mine came with a warped rotor right out of the box.For the money you’re better off going hydraulic, but if you want mechanical brakes then these are it.

This is my 3rd set & they have improved overall design since the older grey colored 2006 year model.Still like these brakes for their customization But comparing the price difference Now (2018) with SLX/ XT hydraulic's i'd go with hydraulic.1 Main advantage of these mechanical brakes is they are easier to install, replace & adjust compared to hydraulic.BB7 have inside/outside adjustment knobs around the rotor & there is a 3rd adjustment on your levers.Quality is better then the other cheaper brands But as of 2018 these are now 30-40% more expensive while hydraulic has become more affordable. After riding 2 sets of XT hydraulic brakes i will no-longer be buying these & glad i still have a new set of bb7 in the box as a backup.Great brake but too pricey now so i had to remove 1 star !!!

I've upgraded the brakes on my hard-tail MTB from the stock OEM brakes to these and am super satisfied with these brakes. They are generally smoother and have excellent stopping power. No doubt these are some of the best mechanical disc brakes you can buy. Are they better than much more expensive (like XTR kinda expensive) hydraulic brakes? No. They are much better than any hydraulic brake, including some of Avids, at this price-point and they do compare well to many hydraulic brakes, having similar braking power and modulation (paired with SD7 levers). But if you're looking into these you probably already understand the pros and cons of hydraulic brakes and mechanical brakes, so I'm going to say I definitely recommend this if you're looking for a pair of kick ass mechanical disc brakes. One helpful thing I can tell you, look up how to install these, ignoring any suggestions to buy super expensive brake cables. Taking the extra two minutes to learn how will help you get these dialed in much easier. You may also want to sand the rotors a bit to help the pads bed in quicker.

I got one of these about a year ago to replace a cheap brake on a campus bike, and liked it so much that I got another one for my mountain bike build. These brakes are easy to maintain, requiring only a couple tools to completely overhaul it, let alone keep it running.I do notice that these brakes are noisy when they get wet, but otherwise are very quiet. The stopping power is great, and I feel I can go faster safely because I can rely on these brakes to stop me quickly. I have not used hydros, but when coupled with the speed levers from Avid, these have a lot of modulation.Installation is easy, and getting the rotors to not rub is simple. All the screws have thread locking material on them, and I have yet to worry about a screw coming loose. The set comes with all the hardware you need to mount to the front or the back, minus cables and housing. Once the pads start to wear down, it's just a simple matter of a click every few months to keep the pad clearance right. The only gripes I have with them is the rubber boot that wears out, but these could honestly run without them, and the noise when wet, which comes with the territory of disc brakes. These do take a bit to wear in, but once you get it, these brakes perform very well. I doubt that I will be using others in future builds.

Lets face it, if you can't trust your brakes, you're never going to push the limits on your bike. That may not be your thing, but confidence is even more important if you just ride occasionally for a little exercise. Avid BB7's are all about quality and simplicity. Easy adjustment, lots of reliable stopping power. Not the lightest brakes in the world, but you have to make trade off's somewhere.

It took me about 1 1/2 hours to install both brakes including fine adjustments (1 hr. on the first one, 2nd went much quicker. This also included removing the old ProMax or "zoom" brakes). The boxes came with everything I needed for complete installation on front and rear. My bike is a Mongoose XR-PRO 29", which came with horrible disk brakes. After installation I took a 5 1/2 mile ride around the hilly back streets of Ashland, KY. I was very surprised and impressed at the stopping power of these brakes compared to my stock brakes! Absolutely no comparison. And they are very smooth and quiet. I haven't experienced any squealing noises yet. Maybe I will later, but on this initial test run they were as quiet and smooth as can be.The price of these brakes is very reasonable, and THEY DO COME WITH PADS, in case you are not sure. The adjustment "knobs" for both inside and outside pads make adjusting these brakes very easy and precise.I realize I've only used these for a short ride, but if they continue to be as great as this, they couldn't be any better.

Short and to the point. As far as I am concerned, this is the best brake caliper available for cable brakes. The 160mm G2 rotor serves me well in the rear (180mm G2 in the front) and has incredible braking power over the stock Tectro brakes I was using before. The Tri-Align Caliper Positioning System is incredible! Being able to adjust the caliper in seconds while on the trail is awesome, and beyond convenient. I've already beat them up on about 30 miles of rough singletrack and they performed flawlessly. In conjunction with Jagwire cables/housings and the Speed Dial 7 levers, its difficult to differentiate between the BB7 and Hydraulic Brake Systems.
