The Nicholson mill hand file is 6" long and has a rectangular shape with single-cut coarse (also known as bastard) American pattern teeth on the sides and edges for sharpening mill or circular saws and draw filing for a rough finish. The file tapers slightly toward the point to ease access into grooves. The file has single-cut American pattern teeth for sharpening and deburring, and square edges for filing sharp corners. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately).
Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files.

I needed to tidy up some holes in acrylic to mount some servos for a robotics project and this file helped tidy up the edges. Worked as expected.

A very dull file. Even after acid sharpening it was still dull. No depth to the teeth. Disappointing for a Nicholson file.

This is a great item! Bought it to shorten my four-footed family members' nails. Both of them hated the sound of a dremel tool.They have very strong nails, which means when I try to clip the nails, it's a battle, and the nails are still really sharp. This hand file is easy to use, really takes down the nail quickly, and doesn't bother them as much as other methods.

The finish on the file is good. It's smaller than I had pictured but that's my fault for not measuring the one I wanted it to replace.

Cuts ok but the edges are cheesed up. All wavy and curvy and rounded over. Only good for the flat surface. Don’t count on it for the edge.

High quality file. Arrived sharp. Stays sharp. Cuts smooth. Be sure to get a file card to keep debris from clogging up between cutting teeth and you will be able to use this file for many years.

Ok file, I use it for axes. Not very sharp though. My old Nicholson file that I was replacing with this new one is actually still sharper than the new one I received. Quality has definitely gone down.

Great mill file, perfect for many uses. The spacing is quite fine, however, hold up quite well when used properly.

In my opinion as a Machinist of 7 years, Nicholson makes the best files for the money. Although I would pay extra to see them made in the USA again.
