About this item

  • Square shape for filing slots, corners, and keyways, with tapered width to ease access into slots
  • American pattern file for non-precision material removal
  • Double-cut teeth on all sides for rapid removal of material
  • Tang for use with an optional handle (sold separately)

The Nicholson hand file has a square shape with double-cut American pattern teeth for filing slots, corners, and keyways. The file tapers slightly toward the point to ease access into slots. It has double-cut American pattern teeth on all sides for rapid material removal. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately).

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

The paperwork that came with this file said that the signature on it indicated the product was shipped or delivered in perfect condition, but I beg to differ. It had significant rust, though not enough to take any remedial action. The seller should spray such things with a light preservative oil. Great file though...!

I received a three-sided (triangular) file rather than what is described a square (four sided) but I'm not returning it because of too much trouble. I have to send it across the border.

I needed to to make square steel bumper holes bigger. This file did the job quickly. This file type is not easy to find locally.

Four sided file, nice taper. Not made in Canada anymore but that should not affect the quality, fine cut so good for small material control. For the price it is very good.

Good file; unfortunately incomplete description. Here are the details that you might want:The tool is 32cm long with a 24cm cutting section on each of the four surfaces. The top half of the file is tapered from 5mm at the tip to 9mm where the width remains constant for the bottom half, closest to the handle. The tool performs well and cuts through steel at a fairly slow rate but consistent with a fine tooth pattern.

Good files that cut fast in steel and start sharp for a long time. Unfortunately they are very rust prone but that's normal and avoidable with a little wd40.

Just what you would expect from Nicholson, a great high quality file.
