Spreads heat better than the other single loop starters. I use it on my big green egg all the time, has lasted 4 months so far and looks new, I hang it outside also,,, all the time. Good deal.

I have been using a heat gun to start by smoker for a couple of years. It beats the starter cubes and the chimneys, but I had to start three different spots and it still did not burn consistently.This unit has a much greater surface area and gets a larger spot started. Eventually. The downside is this takes about 10 minutes to really get the charcoal going, whereas the heat gun took about half that time. You just need to be prepared.One other thing that most folks won't think about. Where do you set the heater when you take it out of the coals? It's red hot and you can't just lay it on the table. Think about this before you order. A hanging ring on the handle would be really helpful. Hey, manufacturer! Are you reading this?I really like this starter in spite of these shortcomings. The even fire is a plus and storage just requires a shallow drawer.

It works. Not much more to say about it. Cord does become warm so I suspect the wire used is the wrong gauge wire. This is usually what causes these to fail over time. 4 Stars for the build quality/functionality. Price is just okay for this item.

I'll admit, I was a bit nervous to try this at first. Pushing 120v wall power into a resistor can be dangerous in most contexts. But this charcoal starter worked exactly as intended, and didn't give me any fears of using it again.I was very curious to find out just how close to the handle the hot portion would reach, but was pleasantly surprised to see that it only heated up to just before the first bends going to either side. The large diameter wire was cold to the touch near the handle.I would have liked the option for a switch to stop power once the coals are lit, and not have to pull the power from the wall, but that's not worth a star in my opinion.The whole coil heated up to a red hot glow in about a minute, and didn't get any hotter. I was wondering if it would reach orange/yellow temps, but it did not. Since that would be excessive for its purpose, this was good. It certainly exceeds the ignition temp of most carbon based fuels.
