To install this photo electric box would have cost $100-150 in our area of northern Virginia. Did it myself and it works as it should.

This is my second purchase of same item as a replacement for the original unit that lasted 15+years.The first one I purchased for another set of outdoor lights was 5 years ago and it still works great! And installation with color coded wires is very easy.

We had this installed on our house when we bought it. It was supposed to turn our garage lights on when it got dark. Except something was wrong with the one that we had and so for years our lights have been on 24/7. So our neighbor told us to buy this and he installed it and it’s great! Our lights now come on and off as they should and maybe will be saving a few cents every month. Hooray!

This is installed under a carport to control the carport overhead lights. The area is obviously in constant shade and receives no direct sunlight. I was skeptical this would work due to the area being in area of moderate shade/darkness despite being "outside". I removed the manual on/off light switch and installed this in the switch's place. It works flawlessly, goes on at dusk and always goes off when the sun comes up. My only mild concern was that it has no ground wire so the previous ground wire that was on the switch was capped and left bundled in the plastic jbox (no grounding screw in the blue plastic jbox).

The product was super easy to install and worked great the first day. It did not come on at all the next day. When I tapped on the box, it came on briefly for a few minutes on day 3 and has not come on since then. Very disappointing.

I purchased two of these (one that I needed and an extra) in Dec 2016 to replace the original installed in my home in 2011. The installed replacement failed "open" i.e. the lights would not turn on over the Summer of 2018. So I guess I got 5 years from the original but only 20 months from the replacement. I'm glad I got two. I popped in the replacement and my outdoor sconce lights work fine again. The Arizona sun is tough on everything so I am pretty pleased >> 4 stars.

My last one only lasted about 6 months that the builder installed so I hope this one will last longer. Will update my review if it doesn't last the entire 2 year limited warranty. Overall the item is sturdy and once I installed it, it worked great no problems. Just make sure you wire it correctly. I seen others say their light will turn on and off during the day. That means you wired it backwards. S to make sure you wire it right just snap a picture on your phone or mark the two black wires so you know which wires go to the red and black go to. White goes to white, red to black and black to black. The black wires are where you can do it backwards. Good product just hope it lasts longer this time.

I really like this photo-electric cell. I had considered a motion detector, however, during the winter when the bulbs are COLD, CFLs take so long to warm up that actor that triggered it would be long gone. With this device, the lights are on all night, but I'm using CFLs (maybe LEDs) in the future, and the cost of the electricity is minimal. It also helps that I have a completely SOLAR electrical home and I can't use enough electricity to raise my monthly bill above the $2.50/month service charge. Also, I removed the photo switch from the cover plate and inserted it in an available home on an existing light box. All I can say is that it goes on and off as I would expect. It is totally unobtrusive and doesn't draw anymore visual attention than the normal plug for the unused hole would. For reference, four large CFL floods (each 100W equiv) on the line and this is well within the limits of this device.I will buy additional cells as needed.Good product
