When used, it looks really sloppy and messy. I looked online, it said nothing, no instructions. I looked at the video that was also linked to the photos and there was no information. Don't buy!

There are only a handful of different designs of yarn ball winders out there and this one is pretty typical - and very, very plasticky. However, yarn doesn't exactly weigh a lot and the crank mechanism seems to be at least partly metal and turns smoothly.Assembly requires little more than inserting and twisting the spool rod and clamping it to a table...which is a little awkward as it's just a wing nut and a threaded bolt rather than any actual clamping system.Unlike the larger winder I've used before with exposed gears and a spinning yarn guide, the entire spool on this one spins around as you turn the handle. A huge portion of the device's weight is in that spinning spool, so while this can (and does) wind yarn just fine it has a disconcerting throbbing wobble as the entire thing twists and flops back and forth. As a result it's best for occasional use as it can't wind yarn quite as fast as I'd have expected.

The darning needles in the little pack are very flimsy and I don’t anticipate them lasting longer than a week. If you intend to use this for thicker yarn (size 5 or 6 especially blanket yarn) the bottom of this winder is angled more down than my last and the yarn will start wrapping around the bottom making it incredibly difficult to remove from the winder

This is a fairly standard yarn ball - or “cake”- winder. It operates smoothly, not much assembly required, only attaching the spindle which accepts the yarn. It is used in combination with a yarn swift, or can rewind commercial skeins into the easier to use “cakes”. I knit a lot, so have used this type of winder for many years. This type clamps onto a table edge, and makes quick work of a making a yarn ball. Instructions are included as well as a few stitch markers and plastic yarn needles. Very nice item, thanks.

I mean sure it will make it into a ball but not how a yarn winder is supposed to. I just took it out of the box and its already not even working. The listing says it's fixable but gives no direction for how to fix it. After many tutorials and explanations it's obvious that its just a bad product. They don't even have a website outside of amazon for me to find help.

This works pretty well, but the yarn balls that I can get out of it aren't that large. It is definitely a hand saver when it comes to winding up loose yarn, that's for sure. I am definitely glad that I ordered it!
