A kalimba, also known as a thumb piano, is a small handheld musical instrument.
Kalimbas originated in Africa and are considered a traditional instrument there.
It consists of a wooden board with attached metal tines or keys of varying lengths.
The tines are plucked with the thumbs to produce musical notes.
The longer tines produce lower pitches while shorter tines make higher pitched tones.
They are very portable and can be played anywhere.
The kalimba's sound is light, melodic and has a soothing, ethereal quality.
It is relatively easy for beginners to learn and play simple melodies on.
More advanced players can create rich, layered sounds by plucking multiple tines simultaneously.
