If you want the real sour flavor and aroma of the genuine San Francisco bread, you'll be happy baking with this product. Sourdough bread is made with wild yeast instead of packaged baker's yeast. The San Francisco sour dough starter that you will receive is made up of a tiny amount of flour, the live wild yeast organisms, and another live organism called a lactobacillus, which is what creates the sour flavor in your sourdough bread. If you'll follow the detailed instructions in the 12-page printed booklet you receive, you will not only make your own homemade genuine San Francisco sourdough bread, you'll have fun doing it. The San Francisco sour dough starter also makes wonderful pancakes and waffles too.

It is a very honest review. I had experience with starters before, I even made one from scratch.I have one that is going on strong, it is from King Arthur. I don't like it very much because it is too acidic for my taste. I have found my own way to make sourdough and if I let it ferment longer is too acid, so I baked it fast.I received my SF starter yesterday afternoon (4/14/2016) and I didn't follow the instructions. They looked so foreign for what I read and knew from my previous experience.I added 150 ml of water and 150 grms of all purpose flour and I used a glass container. I mixed them very well and mixed it again after one hour.I let it rest for 2 hours and didn't see much activity.I gave a final mixed after 3 hours and placed it in the oven. It is still cool at nights in Houston, TX (nor for too long), so I did this little trick. I turn the oven on (the temperature doesn't matter) and at the moment I heard the click ( I have a gas oven, this click is when the gas ignites) then I turned off immediately the oven. That gave a boost of temperature enough to maintain the oven warm enough during the cool night. I placed the starter inside over night.Next morning the starter was bubbly and alive, very alive. I added water and flour (100 gms each). I mixed very well.I didn't discard anything. This afternoon it was bubbly and increased in size more than twice. I tested a portion to see if it floats in water and it does. It is ready to make some sourdough bread.I said honest review. What I don't like are the instructions. It has too much and it doesn't go to the point. A novice baker will have problem understanding the instructions.I didn't follow them, but it turned out great.I would add that smells better than the one from King Arthur. It is sweeter. I would bake one bread tomorrow Saturday and I would update this review. In other words, the product is great, instructions not that much.

A few years back, I made my own starter that I kept on my countertop. I had to feed it everyday out there, and once a week in the fridge. I made lots of fun stuff with it, to be sure. The main reason I wanted to make sourdough, though, is to duplicate the San Francisco bread I have always been in love with. I never got there with my own starter, and when my enthusiasm waned, my started ended up getting neglected and dying.I got the urge again, and tried to get some established starter locally, but when that didn't pan out, I got impatient and looked online. I was a bit skeptical about dehydrated sourdough, but I read the reviews and decided to take the leap.Within a few hours of rehydrating my starter, I was amazed to find it already super bubbly. I can't believe it can come back to life at all, much less that vigorously. One of the things I liked already about the starter is that it can go up to three months without being fed. A girl can't ask for a more low maintenance starter. In fact, the longer it goes unfed, the more sour the dough. Woo-hoo!I bought it a few weeks ago, and up until yesterday I had only made some crepes and pita. Another thing that is really, really nice about this starter is the directions that come with it. I've read so much online, and I have a sourdough e-book, but her directions are so perfect. That's another reason I'd recommend this starter. Yesterday, I followed her directions for making bread, and my first loaf came out perfectly. First try! My sponge was super active, and the rises both worked out. And the bread! Finally, I had the chewy crust, and the moist inside, and it was a bit sour! I had only let it rise about six hours, and I've got another loaf that has been in the fridge overnight. That one should be even more sour.I couldn't be happier with this starter, and the instructions that come with it. I love that she has a website with other products that can help with the process. I highly recommend this starter. It's super low maintenance, comes with lots of great instructions, and tastes amazing!
