I don't know if this was an open box, or they just don't care to package it correctly, but the top of the pump box had been rubbing against the backside of the casing of the electronics on the back of the solar panel, leaving several scratches. No big deal, since it'll be under water, but I'm glad it didn't cause damage to the panel...I think! There are 12 bio-balls inside, as well as several ceramic rings and balls, some of which are small enough to have come out of the pump box through the hole in the top. This makes the device noisy when carried but, again, it doesn't matterThe box is black and blue, and everything is black. There are several attachments so that you can bring the fountain head up to the surface of the water. And here's where the challenge comes into play. You're going to need strong sunlight for this to function. I tried some fairly strong lights of mine but got nothing more than rhythmic spurting from the pump. Unless you can find the right power adapter that is waterproof and UV-proof, you're stuck with the panel. If you don't have good sunlight in your area, this is not the device for you without the power adapter and a waterproof outlet. Finally, I pulled out a 7,500-lumen light, and a worklight that's supposedly 25,000 lumens (but it's weaker than the other one, so they probably mis-typed the lumens, which means 2,500), and those two combined caused it to pump constantly through 2.5" of water (I'm testing it indoors, so I didn't use the tubes), and it went about 1.5" above the surface. So, as you can see, you've really got to have a power source or very strong sunlight. Maybe you could add some more solar panels, and mount it on a sun-tracking array.

Two things are missing here that would make an immense difference, a battery so that the pump works when a cloud comes overhead, and an on/off switch. I found that the pump would completely stop working when a cloud went over. This would be simple to fix by including a battery. If you are in a commonly cloudy area, you may want to look for an more complete system that includes a battery to store energy for cloudy times. The pump is adequate and the different attachments do offer some nice variations - when the sun is out. Other than that, it's a "meh".UPDATE: It seems that after just a few hours of work, this pump stopped, dead. I emptied the water, making certain the pump was clear and the water was, also. I reinserted the pump onto the water and it worked - for maybe 10 seconds. Then it began a high pitched squeal that was followed by the water stopping. This happened several times before I pulled it out of the water a threw it away. Thus, my review went from 3-stars, to 1. That's a shame, as I hate to do that the a manufacturer, but those are the facts.

Simplest set up I have had with a water feature. Everything needed was in this kit. It has the pump, filter box, and solar panel. I did not have to run any electricity out from the house. As soon as I connected the panel to the pump it started running. This afternoon, it was overcast and it was running with no problem. The only things I did buy was a small hose clamp and a longer hose.I am using it in a very small pond. If you are trying to use it in a larger water feature then you may need to look at something else with a greater GPM. It has the desired slow trickle that I am wanting not a large cascading waterfall.

I am excited for spring. I know it is a fountain but I got it specifically to replace the plug in pump in my hydroponic system. I am looking forward to getting my hydroponic garden set back up for the summer. Hoping this will keep the water moving through without having to rely on electricity. If it doesn't keep the water flowing in my hydroponic system, I will likely return with an update and will got back to using it as it is intended in a bird bath or the pond. Fingers crossed.

Our condo building lacks external water access and electrical outlets. With our patio garden, any watering and electrical requires daily multiple manual efforts to plug/unplug/watering cans and keeping the patio door ajar during use. Being able to replace older electrical pumps with solar options has been the perfect solution, especially with SW facing sun throughout the day. This filter pump was the perfect solution for one of my water features with hydroponic plants. With the previous pump only, organic debris would eventually block the filter and affect the water flow/pump. Reaching into ice cold water on these colder days to collect and clear debris, take out and clean the pump, and re-position/test got old fast. Now with this solar filter pump, the water stays clear, periods between cleanings just got a lot longer and with more peace of mind if my little fur babies take a drink or two too on hot days. The separate panel has a long extension cord so that can be set in a sunnier location if needed. I have a 3 of these solar water fountains, from 12v pump w panel and longer cord, this one, and disk style. They all require full sun to work best, but this one works well with partial sun too - it works even when the others don't. Highly recommended! 5 stars..

This is very inexpensive so it was pretty much what I expected. Its powerful enough if your pond is a soup pot but nothing larger. It does work.
