Benefits of Bottom-Diffused Aeration

Aeration promotes oxygen which is the lifeline of every ecosystem. Although waterfalls and fountain sprays add oxygen to the water, they are not always enough and should be supplemented with diffused aeration. With bottom-diffused aeration, water is more efficiently circulated, which increases dissolved oxygen levels. Bottom-diffused aeration:

  1. Supports Beneficial Bacteria: Beneficial bacteria are aerobic and need oxygen to survive. These bacteria consume the excess nutrients in your pond, which fuel algae growth and pond muck accumulation. Aeration allows these bacteria to work harder to clean up your pond, leading to an overall cleaner pond.
  2. Saves Money – Aeration systems are energy-efficient and can help you cut down on your energy bill. These systems are designed to run 24/7, yet only cost a few bucks per month. Rather than running a costly waterfall pump all the time, use a pump only when you are there to enjoy it and rely on a properly sized aeration system to keep the dissolved oxygen levels high. This small change can save you hundreds of dollars each year.
  3. Reduces Maintenance – In conjunction with proper filtration, adding aeration will keep your pond cleaner longer. This means you can spend more time relaxing around your pond rather than spending time cleaning it.

In addition, fish love aeration! Your fish will gather around and enjoy the bubbles coming from the diffusers.

FAQs

How large of a pond does this unit aerate?

The Pond Guy Pond Aerator is the ideal choice for aerating water gardens and koi ponds between 1,000 and 6,000 gallons. The Aerator 1 works in ponds with a max depth of four feet and no more than 3,000 gallons of water. The Aerator 2 works in ponds with a max depth of four feet and no more than 6,000 gallons of water.

How often do you need to replace the diffuser stick?

You only need to replace the diffuser if there is damage. If you are experiencing poor performance and low amounts of air coming out of the stick, start by cleaning off any debris or algae that may have accumulated. If cleaning does not improve performance, then most likely the unit needs a compressor maintenance kit.

How often should I install a new maintenance kit?

We recommend installing a new maintenance kit every year. Over time the compressor diaphragm(s) can become worn, and this wear will greatly reduce the air output of the unit. Installation is easy and there are step-by-step videos of the process.

Will a pond aerator keep an open hole in the ice during winter?

Aeration kits infuse oxygen into the water by releasing small bubbles from a diffuser stick, which moves the water and allows for gas exchange. In most climates, aeration is sufficient to maintain open water in even freezing conditions. If you live in a colder climate, however, your water garden may need a little extra help during the winter. In this case, a combination de-icer and aeration kit is a great solution. Using them together will ensure that a hole is kept open in the ice, water circulates properly, and dissolved oxygen levels remain high. Additionally, using a pond aeration kit during winter will allow you to use a smaller wattage de-icer, which could help you save money on your energy bill.

Are there other steps needed for winter pond care?

During the winter, we recommend moving the diffuser sticks to half your maximum depth. This will help reduce ice formation and keep a pocket of warm water for your fish at the bottom of the pond.

Excellent pond aerator with a good amount of power. Second purchase of this model to have an additional unit. I had purchased a different aerator when this wasn't available and it did not have the power that this model has. It is fairly quiet for the amount of air that it provides. Using on 5000 gallon koi pond.

In 2009 I purchased a house with a 2500 gal koi pond and have almost given up on it multiple times. I wish I would’ve gotten this at the beginning. My waterfall goes across most of the back of the pond but it doesn’t move enough water. I’ve had the aerator a month and my water has never looked as good as it does now. Installation was super easy. I didn’t originally purchase the rock but I bought it shortly after to protect it from FL sideways rain. If you’re looking at this you likely know that you need more aeration. Make sure that you get something that will work with the size of your pond. If this broke (after a couple of years use) I would pay double to replace it.

I was losing water from my pond and it was getting worse by the day. I decided to turn off the waterfall to see if that was the source. With the heat we’ve been having, I had to supply oxygen for the koi. I had purchased the Aquascape 4 disc aerator in the past and it didn’t last long. The discs came off and fell to the bottom then the unit stopped putting out air. The motor was running but not no air. Based on that experience, I decided to buy the one from The Pond Guy. When I unpacked the box I could tell this one was going to put out air! The hose is huge in comparison to Aquascape’s. It puts out more air with one hose than the other one with four hoses. Plus the line sinks so no ugly hose laying across the top of your pond. One issue I’ve had twice is that it suddenly stopped working. I am not sure if it tripped the circuit or if the unit overheated. I reset the circuit and plugged it back in and still nothing. Tried another outdoor outlet and nothing. I was about ready to pack it up and return for a replacement but made one last attempt. Plugged it back in to the same outlet and it worked. I’m baffled. If it happens again, I will send it back for a replacement. I’m having the waterfall rebuilt the middle of September when the heat wave ends. It took the koi about a week to adjust going from waterfall to aerator but they are fine now. Providing that the loss of power was not the unit, I do recommend this over others. It’s worth the extra money. And if it is the unit I will return for a replacement. It’s that good!UPDATE: I returned this unit because it shut down again. I ordered another one and it is perfect. It seems more powerful than the one I retuned. I had the leak repaired, the waterfall rebuilt and the pond pressure washed. It’s beautiful and I don’t think I’ll even need the heater for ice this winter because this aerator is that strong. I’m very happy with it and highly recommend it.

I definitely see a difference with my fish being more active. It probably will help with the plant roots getting some oxygen also. I do have a bit of an issue with it getting hot and not producing as much air when the pump is in the sun and in the heat. It's only about 100 degrees and will get hotter in the summer. I will be building a shade canopy to for shade and to help keep it out of the weather. The pump is quiet and the airline looks like good quality. I just live in Arizona and it gets hot.

I have a small about 8'x11' water garden containing about 500 gallons. For the past few years I have been trying to add sufficient aeration with an Airmax 4 disc aeration unit. My pond gets pretty warm in the summer and there just didn't seem to be enough oxygen getting in to help keep down the algae formation. I was looking for some major aeration. This unit caught my attention for several reason; 1. it is rated for up to 4000 gallons, 2. it has a weighted hose, 3. the air bar is also weighted to keep it on the bottom. I hooked up the unit and put the aerator in the deepest part of the water feature; which is almost in the center. Fingers crossed I plugged it in. Immediately a gush of wonderful bubbles rose to the surface. Some people would call it overkill, but I love the column of churning bubbles and the way it moves the water out in all directions over almost all of the pond. The shallow edges being the exception. My fish LOVE the oxygen column. It is still only Spring, so I am anxious to see how the added oxygenation affects the pond in the hot months.

Not good for an AZ Koi Pond, unless you can cover the aerator and it's in the shade. You need to cover it with some type of faux rock, like I have. I have it under a medium sized faux boulder, but the boulder is in the Sun all day. I have no shade around the perimeter of the pond, so the faux boulder and the pump are in the Sun half of the day. The pump will overheat and shut off to protect itself, but it will not stay running if it's 90° and Sunny out. The pump works great and the fish love swimming through the bubbles, but it's useless to me since I can't keep it running. Too bad. It's not a bad pump. I still gave it 4 stars because it's a great addition to a pond if you have it in the right environment. AZ is just too dang hot for it.Update: I found this wouldn't stay running for me since it is so hot in AZ and I can't relocate this in the shade. I ended modifying a Faux Boulder I got at Home depot with a cooling fan and a thermostatic switch. This work great. I have the sensor set to turn the fan on at 90°+-3°.
