About this item

  • Extra Power - Quarter inch rod magnets give this pickup extra output and punch, while the staggered pole pattern delivers an edgier tone with gritty midrange.
  • Punchy Midrange - With more than twice the power of a traditional Strat single-coil, the Quarter Pound Staggered has a fat and punchy midrange and well-defined top end that’s always ready to be cranked.
  • Sparkly Midrange Harmonics - Hand polished Alnico 5 rod magnets deliver sparkly midrange harmonics, great sustain, and big, full chords.
  • Versatile Setup - Use a set of three for a huge sounding Strat setup, or pair with SSL-5 Custom Staggered Strat in the neck and middle for added versatility.
  • Made in the USA - Hand built in Santa Barbara, CA, this Quarter Pound Staggered Strat pickup features hand built bobbins using a custom high-output coil wind, diameter Alnico 5 rod magnets, and are wax potted for squeal free performance.

Application :High output true single-coil. Recommended for blues, classic rock, garage, heavy rock, classic metal and nu-metal. Description Similar tonality to the SSL-4 Quarter-Pound Flat but with a staggered magnet pattern. Like the SSL-4, the hand polished, quarter-inch diameter magnets are matched with a powerful coil winding to deliver great sustain. Does not use a cover. Complete setup : calibrated set available with RW/RP middle pickup. Many players use an SSL-7 in the bridge position with vintage output pickups, like SSL-1’s, in the neck and middle for tonal versatility. Guitars For any balanced Strat. Works especially well with rosewood fingerboards. Available mods : reverse wound, reverse polarity (RW/RP) middle pickups for hum canceling in positions “2” and “4” on the five-way switch. Tapped version for dual output levels. Players : Jon Butcher, Alex De Rosso / Dokken

First impressions after installing it: Volume-wise the SSL-7 balances well with a hot bridge humbucker. Switching to the single coil doesn’t cause a volume drop. A bit of a strat-ish character as you would expect from this type of PU but less bright, which is good for those creamy high gain solo sounds. For clean sounds I miss some high-end sparkle, but that's OK with me.

This is a noisy, harsh single coil pickup. It can be worked with, but it takes some tone shaping and the right amplifiers for it to even be useable in the middle position.

Best blues tone a Stratocaster can buy! Lots of mid range balls! That's because the magnets are 1/4" wide! A stock Strat's are only 1/8"! I have these pick-ups at the neck and in the middle positions, with a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail at the bridge. I accept no substitutes! They make my DiMarzio pick-ups sound anemic.

This is a very nice pickup. I have the same pickups in another guitar, and they sound great! They have enough output to work well when paired with a humbucker. This is one of Seymour Duncan's most popular true single coil pickups. It's been around since the company started in the late '70s to early '80s.

i put this on my 98 Mexican fat strat in combination with the SH11 custom humbucker. Now it sounds like a strat ought to.
