Tele Vue is known for its in-house eyepiece and telescope designs by Al Nagler; our latest eyepiece brings new meaning to the term "in-house." The concept for this eyepiece was first proposed by Tele Vue President David Nagler, with performance parameters giving it the fundamental characteristics (the ethos) of a Tele Vue eyepiece: high contrast, comfortable eye relief and full field sharpness. Control of astigmatism, field curvature, lateral color, angular magnification distortion correction (technical reference), and low pupil sensitivity for daytime use were specified criteria. Following Tele Vue's philosophy of pushing the state of the art, long-time Tele Vue employee and optical design protege Paul Dellechiaie took up the challenge and designed the basic eyepiece form. Under Al's guidance, Paul tweaked his design to fulfill the original goals. While sharpness is inherent to the optical design, contrast is maximized through the intelligent use of flat finished baffles and ultra low reflectance, high efficiency coatings tuned to the composition of each element. At the 2007 Northeast Astronomy Forum, Tele Vue once again broadened the amateur astronomer's perspective on the universe and introduced a new observing experience; 100° of pure Tele Vue quality. With a 13mm focal length evoking the original "Nagler" revolution, the field area of this new eyepiece is more than 50% larger than an 82° field. The Tele Vue Ethos is essentially multiple e

I guess the only thing that can be said is that this is worth the price. I have multiple 1.25 lenses and barlows before finally deciding to buy this lens. One lens covers the full range of lenses that I own and the image is MUCH better. Just make sure you have a good diagonal before you purchase.

Awesome eyepiece. It’s huge though. Wouldn’t fit under my Celestron Nexstar 5SE in the eyepiece accessory tray. Got a really nice look at the Orion nebulae when combined with a filter.

I didn't love the price! But this is a truly Awesome eyepiece, combined with a televue 4X barlow my 12.5" reflector gets about all the magnification it can. I bought it for the 2020 conjunction, given the price I was not sure I was going to keep it when Jupiter and Saturn had drifted back apart. When I saw the image I knew it would not be an Amazon return.

This is a wonderful eyepiece! Optically close to perfect, this line of eyepieces allows you to similarly frame a DSO like a cluster or a galaxy at 2X the magnification that you'd get using a Plossl i.e. to frame a DSO the same way with a Plossl as this eyepiece, you'd have to use a 26mm Plossl. In the Ethos, the object would appear 2X as large. With sufficient aperture, you increase your chances of actually seeing the same DSO because even though the DSO is 4X fainter as compared to the 26mm Plossl, contrast is unchanged and at the large angle subtended by the object, your eye might succeed in detecting the object even if its undetectable with the 26mm Plossl in the same telescope. Look into the material presented in Roger Clark's Visual Astronomy of the Night Sky for a more detailed explanation of what I'm saying here...While not as heavy as the 21mm Ethos, I find that this eyepiece still has enough weight to stress standard focusers. The standard focuser in my XT8 Classic dob tens to slip when using this eyepiece near the horizon. Make sure that your focuser is able to handle the weight. You may have to upgrade focusers to prevent the eyepiece from slipping. Thanks to the huge 100 AFOV, this eyepiece becomes a workhorse in my telescope, yielding medium magnification -- 92X -- at a true FOV of just under 1.1 degree. I use this eyepiece as my 'finder' eyepiece when hunting for DSOs unless I happen to know that the DSO is larger than a degree across. Thanks to the 100 degree AFOV, while the eyepiece is perfect as a 'finder', the magnification is high enough that objects show lots of detail. At 60 arc minutes, the double cluster in Perseus fills the FOV of this eyepiece at 92X!!Pair this eyepiece with a longer focal length eyepiece for low surface brightness objects and a few shorter focal length eyepieces to see detail - a full set of the 21mm, 8mm, and 6mm Ethos complement this eyepiece nicely!

I am relatively new to the telescope hobby and was not sure whether I should spend this kind of money on a single eyepiece despite all the great things I'd read about the Tele Vue line. After a great deal of rationalization, I purchased my first Ethos and will be buying my second one shortly.I don't have a large frame of reference relative to other eyepieces as the only other ones I've used are the low end Plossls that came with the telescope. From what I can gather they would retail for about $20-$25, so I went from the lowest possible quality to a top of the line instrument without any in between steps up in quality. That said, purchasing the Ethos eyepiece was a great decision and I still cannot believe the difference the upgrade made. The clarity and planetary detail are spectacular, and the large field of view makes for an easier viewing experience. The addition of this eyepiece along with an upgrade to the supplied diagonal turned a good telescope into an amazing telescope. This review is based on use in a Celestron 9.25 inch SCT with a Baader Prism diagonal.

Great eyepiece. On my 12", f/10 telescope, this is about as high a magnification as you'll want to get (unless observing planetary targets.) Along with my 21mm Ethos, this makes for a great 1-2 punch for most of my observing.

One of the best mid focal length mass produced eyepieces ever made (another one is TeleVue Ethos 8 mm). Totally worth money spent.

Outstanding eyepiece with a wonderful extremely wide field of view. I'm not sure if it's completely worth the price, but it's certainly something to experience and is the gold standard by which all other oculars are judged.
