much better than using cables. I have cables on two other gates but i wanted to give this a try. item arrived quickly. took a few minutes to put it together and had it hung in about five minutes time. Did not like the middle bracket holder. mine was even bent. i had a conduit bracket so i used that instead of the cheap bracket that came with it. Its a lot easier to adjust and very sturdy. Lot more expensive than cable brackets but saves time in installing and if you have to adjust it later. To me it was worth the extra price.

The brace consists of two tubes where one slides inside of the other. You make a crude adjustment by lining up holes in the inner and outer tubes and locking with a couple of machine bolts through the holes. Fine adjustment is made by machine bolts that thread into the ends. The tubes are way heavier than needed for something that's always in tension. They're close to water pipe thickness. That said, you're not going to bend these if you happen to grab one to pull the gate closed.Pros:- Straight-forward install- Stout construction- Appears to be made from off-the-shelf hardware so you could get longer/shorter adjustable bolts if needed (I substituted the end brackets for something in a matching finish).- Less expensive than competitorsCons:- Sloppy welds and finish. They look sound but you wouldn't turn this in as your project for welding class- Not decorative. I wouldn't want these on my garden gate.Caveat Emptor: I've ordered 3 of these; 2 have arrived. One completely disappeared from UPS tracking and I had to get a refund. Another disappeared but reappeared a week later and was eventually delivered. There's either something about the vendor's shipping department or the product's packaging somehow befuddles UPS's sorting hardware.

I looked at any number of tieback braces. By far, the HANDYGO brace is the best designed and robust product I found. (After buying and returning two other brands) The video really helped me finally make the right determination. The brace's strength and ongoing adjustability is more than expected. Moreover the price is half that of competitive products. The majority of the other products for sale are *%#^. My application is a slightly different than strengthening an old sagging gate; but, serves the same purpose. I'm using it as a structural tieback instead in support of a new 7' 6" gate. My gate is long and heavy. It's attached with six hinges to a 4"x6" post set in concrete. We installed an additional 4"x4" unattached post 2' away. I'm using the brace to structurally connect the two posts for additional support.

OMG, Do Not Buy. The instructions look like the millionth copy make from a 1980’s copier. Once I figured the instructions out, it should have been simple, but the screw threads in the end of the rod seemed to be rusted or otherwise obstructed, as I could barely screw in the bolts. That meant the length could not be fine-tuned, and therefore I now have a steel rod bolted to my gate that provides absolutely no structural assist. I tried twice to get enough tension by levering the gate up while bolting the rod on to it, but alas, that didn’t help either. On the bright side, the rod is nice and sturdy, so if I ever take up fighting with a staff, I am good to go.

I bought 2 of these because I have a double gate fence with very large gates (enough to drive a truck through), which the original fence contractor screwed up the construction (no diagonal bracing, which caused the gates to sag terribly). Some other reviews said there were no instructions. Both of mine did, although they were not very good. Who really READS instructions anyway? The videos (see the product description page here on AMZN) show you exactly how to assemble and install these things. Some reviewers comments about the threads in the rods being dirty/crud preventing full insertion of the bolts is correct. Solution: use a tap & die tool to clean out the threads. If you don't have a tap & die set, here's every DIY opportunity to pick up another useful tool for the collection! The quality of the rods appear to be good and the coating looks like it will protect it against the weather.I replaced all the supplied screws and bolts with stainless steel versions as well as used lag bolts instead of screws. The total additional cost for the stainless steel lag bolts and bolt was maybe $10 max at the local big box hardware store. Why do this? Given it's outdoors, ordinary steel screws and bolts will rust and I don't want to deal with screws or bolts that have rusted so badly that you can't get them off. Also applied anti-seize to the threads of the bolts which enables them to remain movable and also protect it against corrosion and weather. And of course did this product work? Yes!

This is a great anti-sag brace at a great price compared to the competitors. The supplied wood screws for attacking the brace to the fence would probably be fine on smaller gates but I would recommend replacing the wood screws with nuts, bolts, and washers if you're working with a larger heavy gate. I've got two 8 foot tall by 6 foot wide gates to give me a 12 foot wide opening, so I opted to drill holes all the way through the gate to secure the brace with stainless steel nuts, bolts, and washers to get some good strong clamping force to hold it. Wood screws under tension would be prone to becoming loose and pulling out over time. Besides my concerns with the hardware on heavy loads, the brace itself is excellent and I would gladly spend an additional $10 on much stronger stainless hardware that will hold and last a lifetime. I also replaced the adjustable bolts on the ends with longer bolts to get a little more length.
