Most of the handrail brackets are made of cast zinc, and the zinc brackets will be strong enough that the rails won't fall down, but be aware that the zinc will break if large person really uses it for support, or tries to break a fall. These stainless steel brackets are many times stronger than the zinc. They come with heavy stainless steel screws that are not going to break.I have lived in this house for 35 years and I have seen several of the zinc brackets break. I replaced the zinc brackets with stronger looking zinc brackets because I didn't find a better choice at the time. This time I searched until I found these stainless steel brackets. They look pretty bulletproof to me. I would be surprised to learn that even one of these had ever failed. Pricewise these are a little more expensive than zinc, but not as much as you might think.

I choose these stainless ones instead of the brass or aluminum, I had a freind that leaned hard on the railing and broke the last bracket off. It seems like these stainless ones should hold up better than the old ones. The only things that could have made them better is longer screws. I just got my own a replaced the shorter ones they sent with longer ones and made sure the brackets were secured in to the studs.
