01-03-2025 UPDATE:I just installed the most recent full system update that included ver. 2.90 for the AIS 800. I had a lot of back and forth with Garmin for acknowledgement of a fix in the new firmware. My client's boat is now a hour away from me so I wanted to know if its been fixed as the update notes on Garmin's website did not mention fixing the position error. The best answer I could get is "it should be fixed and we don't always disclose on the website everything fixed in a firmware update, but from the internal notes I have access to, it looks like it was fixed". Another 3 hours of labor lost and the update didn't fix it. I'm waiting again on Garmin to reply to my email sent this morning. I discovered & reported this issue back in February of last year and it still persists. Never had problems like this with Navico or Raymarine AIS transponders. Do yourself a favor and go with one of the other brands I mentioned, even if you are already outfitted with Garmin. The other boat data will still be shared over NMEA2000 (or 0183) to your chartplotter no matter the brand. I used to be biased towards Garmin because the hardware was reliable, and the interface was easy to me. I will no longer recommend Garmin due to financial cost of this single issue and the fact I will continue to lose more labor as its not fixed. I might even have to purchase another manufacturer's AIS transponder out of my own pocket to put an end to this saga. Who makes a $2500 AIS transponder? Garmin does! Just installed on clients boat and programmed with MMSI. Noticed "low position accuracy" was displayed with a "greater than 10 meter gps error". Oh, and it also transmits that the position accuracy is low! Firmware on AIS is 2.64 and Garmin's website AND technicians are only aware of ver. 2.60 as being the latest. Garmin first had me exchange with a deposit fee and the new unit direct from Garmin exhibits the same low position accuracy as the first and it also has ver. 2.64. The accuracy didn't improve with two different GA38 gps antennas mounted in full view of the sky. Garmin is supposedly working on it. I have email for status but heard nothing back yet. I have not sent Garmin the first unit back yet for the exchange because I'm about ready to return everything and go with a different manufacturer like Raymarine or Navico.I would hold off purchasing a new AIS 800 until this gets resolved. I will update my review when (if) I hear back from Garmin. I have always been a strong supporter of Garmin, but this is inexcusable issue for a life/safety device.

When Si-Tex refused to replace my defective MDA-5 AIS that was uner warranty, I bought this Garmin AIS 800. It was made in Germany and is excellent. Great tech support from Garmin. Integrates well on my NMEA 2000 network.

Internal and external antenna does not have satellite reception. To make this unit work, I have to use the GPS information from my NMEA 2000 network.

The product in the description said "New", but it wasn't because it was programmed with another boats information. Now we are having problems with programming it to our boat and the window to get support from Amazon is closed.

Luckily for me on our Grady 306 canyon I was able to mount it above the head in the top compartment with the vhf radios. I had a NMEA 2000 port right above the unit. A vhf within a foot of the ais, and about 3 foot from a fuse panel so i was very lucky. It has a built in gps so with the location i would think I wouldn’t need the gps but in its location it would be an easy installation again. Once plugged in it automatically connected to my chart plotters and showed receiving other vessels. Luckily I had another boat with ais to I could confirm the Grady was also sending signal. Still does need to be connected to a computer and put in personal information to be legal but was very happy with the product
