Not exactly small to travel with. About 4ft in height collapsed, it fits the width of our highlander fine. They are thick in diameter, like 1.5 inches. It felt really solid. I would think my tarp would rip before these would cave. I considered thinner and lighter poles for easy traveling, but i was uneasy since we were expecting a lot of rain at camp. I didn't have to have to worry one bit about these holding up to the heavy rain and some wind. Also, i didn't extend these all the way since I needed my tarp in a slant so water could drain. It really does make it easier than to find trees nearby to make a makeshift gazebo.

Wanted more shade and these poles are perfect to use with any tarp. As you can see I attached the tarp onto my canopy and used the 2 poles to hold it up. The included rope to tie it securely was great. Sadly I used other stakes to use on the harder ground. But I love these poles and the convenience to adjust the height... May get another set of these.

1st pole was defective out of the box, and the lower joint would not lock or tighten. Disassembled and added several wraps of Teflon tape on the threads and a piece of cloth friction tape to the expanding slide, reassembled and it worked perfectly.2nd pole had the same issue with the same (lowest) joint. Disassembled and attached the expansion slide, and reassembled with no tape and it worked. Results after use: Use as a canopy center pole and these poles will not support the canopy in a 20 MPH wind. As tight as i can turn them, they will compress under a moderate (15Kg) load.I have a sun fly to try using them on, but at present, i cannot use them as poles to support a canopy or tarp in anything but dead calm weather. The bag that the poles, guy lines, and stakes were shipped in was not sewn shut at the bottom, it is open at both ends..

I'm a car tent camper and I already pass some trouble during a storm, till I decided use a tarp on top of my tent to create a dry space around the tent.Even doing this, was not easy, because not always you can find a spot rounded of trees to tie the tent, so now that I'm using this poles, I carmaker my dry space in almost every campsite I went. Finding one or two trees, I use this poles and there is peace, doesn't matter how strong is the storm, I know I'll have my dry space around the tent, and this is so satisfying.

Got to use with tarp for tent camping, and the extend fine, but don't lock easily. It requires being very careful not to twist too much to release. Maybe it'll get better with practice.

The good: these are long and relatively light weight aluminum poles with a good pin and two loops for tying knots. The bad: the plastic feet come loose from the bottom, the stakes are cheap and the guy lines do not have plastic tabs, which makes it a pain to adjust them - you can live with all of those things if getting annoyed is your thing. The ugly: the poles will not lock in the extended position for a long time (read >5min), so these are worthless. The locking mechanism is extremely cheap, below the minimum requirement for these to work. Keep scrolling.

The poles are nice and come with everything you need. The bag they come in is cheap and not very durable but I wouldn't let that keep you from getting the poles
