egg incubating

1. Select Eggs: Only fresh fertilized eggs are able to develop into chick. Store bought eggs that have been refrigerated are unlikely to develop. It's fine to collect fertilized eggs for a few days to build up a clutch before putting them into the incubator, but don't use eggs over a week old.

2. Day 0 – Check for Broken Eggs: Candle your eggs before you put them in the incubator. Carefully place the larger end of the egg (where the air cell is) directly against the light, and check for cracked eggs and eggs that have moving air bubbles inside.

3. Air Bubbles: Having one or more moving air bubbles means the egg is broken even if the crack on the shell might be too small to be seen with naked eyes. Note that all eggs have an air cell at the fat end of the egg, which is different from a moving air bubble.

4. Day 5 – Check Fertilization: There will be a visible web of blood vessels spreading from the center of the egg outwards in every fertilized egg.

5. Day 13 – Check on Embryo Development: The embryo is located in the large end of the egg, where blood vessels radiate under the surface of the shell.

egg candling death

6. Look for signs of dead embryo: Including disappearing blood vessels, a blood ring that looks like a well-defined red circle, which is visible on the inside of the shell, and the development of blood spots or blood streaks inside the egg. Discard the dead eggs immediately to prevent them from turning bad and exploding inside the incubator.

7. Day 18 – 2nd Check on Embryo Development and Death: Death is much less likely to happen during late stage of incubation. However this is a good time to observe the development of the chick and check for any possible death. You don’t have to discard the egg if you are not 100% sure the egg is dead. You’ll see 3 days later.

8. Day 20 – Check for Hatching Eggs: On the 20th day of incubation, you should see active chick movement inside the eggs. If you can see a dark part in the air cell (that is the chick’s beak), hear the chick or feel its movement as a respond to you moving the egg or gently knock the egg, it means the chick is ready to hatch within 24 hours.

9. Day 21 -- Say Hello to Your Baby Chick! Please note that different species have different hatching time. If you have any questions about incubating, you can always ask us!

It's a great, bright flashlight for candling. Don't forget to take the plastic spacer off the battery or you'll think it's broken.

I go this for quail eggs. I have jumbo Coturnix quail so the eggs can be tricky to candle. This light was bright enough to be relatively sure of fertilization. For the price point, I am pleased.

Works good. Does what it’s supposed to do. It works better than the lights that come on the incubators as well. I like the rechargeable battery. I’ve used it many times already and haven’t had to recharge battery yet. Good price and value for your money.

I was surprised at how bright this little candler is. You can easily candle even brown eggs with this device.Pros: - Very bright - Easily fits in your pocket for portability - rechargeable batteryBe careful: - the battery comes with a little round protector on the flat end that is easy to miss. If you don't remove it, your candler will not work and you'll think it's broken. I didn't see this in the instructions although the instructions are VERY small. I included a picture showing the protector on the end. - The charger shows the battery fully charged even with the flat end protector in place. So this is misleading.

Received my egg candler the other day, couldn't wait to use it because I have a brooding hen sitting on eggs. Disappointed because description stated " battery included " but I didn't get one. When I emailed seller was told Amazon wouldn't let him send a battery. Which isn't true due to the fact Amazon sells batteries. Once I used the battery from a flashlight to test the candler, it was bright enough to see even though my darker colored eggs, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that it did work well.
