This yarn ball winder works great! Attaches easily to a table with the built in clamp. Wind easily and doesn't make a lot of noise. The finished cakes look great and are easy to store. Much easier than winding by hand at an affordable price!

To be honest, I wasn't sure if I really needed this, or if it was even worth $20 to buy what looks kinda like a cheap piece of plastic. It may look that way, but that's really all you need, so there was really no need for the company to make a heavier-duty piece of equipment that costs the consumer more. It's simple to use and exactly what I needed to make pulling yarn from a ball easier! I've always wound up with unintentional knots when pulling from a skein as is because of the way it's wound and then catches on things around it while I'm using it. This makes it so much easier to wind it onto a ball before using the yarn and then pull directly from the center of the ball... which also protects the yarn until I get the outside layer of the ball (just like those balls of wrapping paper ribbon you buy off the shelf).Figuring out how to use this was mostly super intuitive. There is a clamp on the bottom to keep in in one place on a table ledge while using. The spool part twists onto the main machine easily as well. The only thing I really had to consult the directions for was to understand how to get the guide loop to stay in place... but it's just a matter of gently pulling it out as far as it will go once you have it in the angle you'd like it. Once you've finished, it all comes back apart easily and stores in the original box.

I wasn't sure this was something I needed, but now I have no idea how I have been crocheting for over 15 years without one. The instructions that came with this were basically impossible to understand, and there were pictures but the printing was terrible so that wasn't helpful. Luckily, YouTube videos are easy to find, and this thing is really pretty idiot-proof. Clamp it to a table, pull the metal rod up and out so it stands up on its own, thread the yard through the loop , hook it across the top of the tube thing, and turn the crank. Keep a little bit of tension on the yarn as it feeds through, and voila. Perfect cake of yarn. When it's done, tuck the end of the yarn under so secure it, pull the hooked yarn out of the top (this is your center pull), and slip the cake up and off of the tube. But my yarn comes in skeins, so why do I need this, you ask? About 50% of the time, the center pull is impossible to find. This little contraption re-winds the ball into a gorgeous cake with a perfect center pull. The cake is so much more "structured" than a typical skein and it stays that way right to the end—which brings me to the next reason I love this thing. When I'm about halfway through a skein, even if I did get a good center pull, it loses shape and gets tangly. Now I can just wind it up into a cake, and it's perfect again!I'm unreasonably excited about this thing and have spent the past 2 days winding cake after cake of yarn. It is so satisfying!

Gets stuck if it is more than a small amount of yarn, and the loop doesn't stay in place.

I purchased this because for me winding balls of yarn is the worse part of knitting, and I often put off or fail to finish projects quickly just to avoid that one task. This ball winder comes with a small scissors, it features a built in table clamp, and the winder "bobbin" comes off for storage. The directions left a lot to the imagination, and made this little gadget look more like a spinning wheel for carded wool than a yarn winder, so I had a bit of a learning curve figuring things out. I found it difficult to lock the yarn guide into place and haven't quite gotten that to be reliable. I'll have to play with it a bit.As you can see the first ball on the left is OK, but not as tidy as the one on the right. I ended up with 3 small balls from 1/2 lb of #4 worsted yarn from one of the big 1 lb commercial skeins. I was hoping for 1 large 1/2 lb ball. Or 2 balls at the most. BUT....overall much faster than hand winding once I got into a rhythm. If you are working with high end yarn that comes in hanks you will need a swift to put the hank onto before making your balls. Commercial skeins wind well guided by hand. HINT: Pull the start of the yarn from the center of the skein to avoid tangling. And you will want to guide the yarb from ABOVE the winder as you wind you yarn. This is great for projects that need many small balls of yarn or are forgiving of frequent joins. Much more suited to crochet projects than for knitting requiring larger balls and less forgiving of joins. I'll still be looking for a winder that can handle 1/2 lb balls, but this is a nice winder for smaller balls or finer wool. 1 star off for the less than stellar instructions.
