There is no better meat tenderizer. I also purchased for my adult children.

Both times someone in my family stole it. Third time I bought an electric machine, noone is walking out with that baby. A year later found this in my mom's kitchen and brought it home. It's nice having a hand held one instead of bringing down the machine from the shelf. This one fits in a kitchen drawer, not that much noise, doesn't weigh a lot, design and build quality is working.

Works great and the holes are perfectly aligned with the tines, er, the pokey things! Plus it’s durable and has stood the test of time! Been using mine for probably about a year or more!

This kitchen tool is a gift for my husband. I am vegetarian, thus do not partake of meat consumption. He, on the other hand consumes meat at least twice a day! He says this tool literally transforms the texture of the meat. He especially observes this when he smokes the meat, summer and winter alike! Thus, he highly recommends it to others to tenderize meats before grilling or sauteing! The Norpro meat tenderizer is easy to hold, cleans effortlessly and is easy to store.

I've used this little device for preparing meats going in my slow cooker in particular. With a fork in my left hand and the tenderizer in the right, I punch down on the meat and then press down with the fork at the base of the tenderizer's spikes while pulling up on it. Once in a rhythm, I can work over the whole piece of meat in a few seconds. Then, without disturbing the open holes, I sprinkle on the meat whatever spices I'm using and then add some liquid from the recipe, such as soy sauce, or I drizzle some of the juices that will go in the slow cooker, such as tomato juice from a can of diced tomatoes. That will get the spices down in the meat (or powdered tenderizer, which I rarely use).I've found this tenderizer to be effective, at least as much as using a fork to stab the meat repeatedly. It will prepare meats for the grill as well.Cleanup isn't really difficult, especially if you swish it in hot, detergent water right after using. A brush will clean it from the side, or you can retract the guard and brush it from the tips of the spikes. Be careful. They're pretty sharp. My first use was on 0.3" breakfast steaks. Because the steaks were so thin, I tenderized them in the styrofoam packaging which I laid on top of a cutting board. For the most part, the spikes didn't go down into the board. Thick meats wouldn't require being careful about what's underneath.

Purchased to pierce the skin when making crispy pork belly. The nail prongs are pointy and sharp but the item is light weight. It took a lot of force to adequately penetrate the skin. I have not used it on any meat portion so unable to comment regarding prongs retracting and food being embedded in the prongs. The handle is plastic and I can see where other reviewers made mention of the handle splitting at the seams. It would be nice if the handle had silicone wrap to secure the hold as well as reenforce the handle.

I originally planned to buy one of the larger more expensive manual meat tenderizers. I'm glad I didn't waste my money. This does a very good job. It has a comfortable handle that makes it easy to use. It is easy to clean and seems to be very sturdy. It doesn't take long to tenderize a large piece of meat even though it has about half the number of spikes as the more expensive ones. The spikes are very sharp and little force is required to pierce the meat. Don't waste your money on the ones with 50 spikes, it's not worth it.
